What Happens When Society Prioritizes Feelings Over Truth
The Shift
Somewhere along the way, we decided that someone’s feelings were more important than truth.
If something feels true to you, it’s true. If someone’s feelings are hurt by what you said, then what you said was wrong, regardless of whether it was accurate.
We’ve created a culture where truth is secondary to feelings.
The Consequences
The first consequence is that we can no longer have conversations about what actually happened. Because if your feelings about what happened are more important than what objectively happened, then there’s no common ground.
The second consequence is that nobody is accountable. Because if I feel like you did something wrong, then you did something wrong, regardless of your intent or the actual facts.
The third consequence is that power goes to whoever has the strongest feelings or the biggest platform. Not to truth, but to who can make the most compelling emotional case.
The Damage to Relationships
In relationships, this is devastating. Because you can’t actually communicate. You can’t say, “This is what happened.” You can only say, “This is how I feel,” and your partner has to accept that as truth.
But two people can have different feelings about the same situation. And when feelings are treated as truth, there’s no way to find resolution. There’s just two competing truths that can’t both be right.
The Path Forward
The path forward is to distinguish between feelings and facts again.
Your feelings are valid and real. And they’re also not necessarily accurate reflections of reality.
We can honor both things: that your feelings matter AND that there’s an objective reality that we need to be able to discuss and agree on.
That’s the only way to actually solve problems and actually communicate.
